Everton plan Brillante swoop

Australia's Josh Brillante

Everton are keen on signing Australian youngster Josh Brillante, according to the Express.

The Toffees want to bring the 20-year-old to the Premier League after his impressive displays at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Brillante currently plays for the Newcastle Jets in the Australian A League and has been called up to the senior Australia squad after impressing national team boss Holger Osieck. The midfielder has also garnered the attention of a host of European clubs, with Lazio and Schalke monitoring the youngster.

But Everton are keen to beat the European sides to his signature, and to make Brillante follow in Tim Cahill’s footsteps by moving to Goodison Park. There would be no concerns over Brillante getting a work permit either, with the youngster holding dual citizenship due to his Italian heritage.

While his Italian history may tempt him to join Lazio, Roberto Martinez will be hoping that Tim Cahill’s success in Merseyside will swing the move in his favour. Cahill scored over 50 league goals for the Toffees in his eight-year spell with the club, and Martinez wants Brillante to try and match the 33-year-old’s record.

Everton kick off the new Premier League campaign away to Norwich on Saturday.

Would Brillante be a good signing? Could he be the next Cahill?
