Everton should keep Lazio linked Funes Mori

Lazio are lining up Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori as a replacement for the outgoing Stefan de Vrij, according to Il Tempo (via SportWitness).

What’s the story?

Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij is certain to leave Lazio this summer, after the 26 year-old decided not to renew his contract. Il Tempo reports Lazio have lined up a number of possible replacements, with Funes Mori high up on the list.

Lazio’s first choice is Stuttgart’s Holger Badtsuber, but Funes Mori is their backup plan.

The 27 year-old has not played for the Toffees this season, as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Many fans have called for the Argentine defender to get a start now he’s reaching full fitness, but if that doesn’t happen he could seek an escape.

Should Everton sell?

Everton spent around £11million on Funes Mori back in 2015, and with two years left on his contract the club will hope to recoup some or all of that money in any sort of deal.

It’s always tricky judging a player after a long-term injury, especially something as serious as a knee operation. Still, it seems short-sighted to get rid of Funes Mori. The 27 year-old is not the most composed defender, but his passion and bravery is something the Blues have certainly lacked this season.

If Funes Mori were to leave this summer, Everton should surely look to ensure the departing Stefan de Vrij comes in as an immediate replacement. They will of course face competition for the Dutchman’s signature, but he wouldn’t just be a replacement for Funes Mori – he would be an upgrade.
