According to The Mirror’s Live Transfer News page (January 7, 19:36), West Ham United are interested in signing Gabriel Barbosa, having been offered the striker on loan by current club Inter Milan.

What’s the word?

The 22-year-old is apparently available on loan until the end of the season, given that he is currently deemed surplus to requirements at the San Siro.

The 4-cap Brazil international attacker has failed to live up to expectations in Serie A since Inter first brought him to Italy in 2016. At the time, both Chelsea and Manchester United were thought to be desperate to bring the forward, commonly known as ‘Gabigol’, to the Premier League.

Now, Barbosa could be about to get his chance to prove his worth in England. However, before the Hammers can seal a deal for Barbosa, Everton ought to enter the race for his signature.

A risk worth taking

The Toffees are in need of a new striker with Cenk Tosun having failed to adapt to the English game following his £27 million January switch to Goodison Park from Besiktas.

Marco Silva should now be considering ways of replacing the Turkish flop forward, and Barbosa could represent a cost-effective solution to this problem.

If Barbosa could get back to his very best then there’s no doubt that he could light up the Premier League. However, gambling on the Brazilian to be able to do that would be a significant risk on the Merseyside club’s part. Silva, though, has already proven himself adept a coaxing the best out of talented youngsters, including Barbosa’s compatriot, Richarlison.

Therefore, a move to sign Barbosa now on loan until the end of the season would be a risk worth taking.
