Everton’s defensive horror show at home to Tottenham Hotspur must spark a January recruitment drive on Merseyside, with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill the leading contender.

What’s the word?

The Toffees were humiliated in their own backyard as they welcomed Spurs to Goodison Park on Sunday, with the north London outfit highlighting the gulf in class between a top-six side and one vying to join them.

Having taken the lead through Theo Walcott, a glaring error by Jordan Pickford and Kurt Zouma gifted Man of the Match Heung-Min Son an open goal to tap home the equaliser just six minutes later.

A lack of leadership and communication at the back saw neither one of Marco Silva’s men back out of their approach, when a shout by either would have prevented Mauricio Pochettino’s side from drawing level and gaining the momentum to surge on and take the lead eight minutes later.

The 39,319 spectators packed into the stadium fell witness to a further wonder strike by Christian Eriksen to put the game to bed, and could easily have seen Pickford shown a straight red for a challenge on Dele Alli who was, fortunately, called offside.

The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below...

Cahill the obvious answer

The lack of leadership at Everton will prove to be a key failure of Silva’s side if the Portuguese manager does not correct the issue in January.

Former England international and captain, Gary Cahill, would be an obvious answer to the Toffees’ failings, as the 33-year-old will be out of contract at Chelsea in the summer.

Maurizio Sarri has shown the two-time Premier League winner will not be part of his plans at Stamford Bridge, and will reportedly allow the defender to leave in January to prove his credentials ahead of his permanent exit.

Luring the 61-cap international to Merseyside would bring great quality and experience to the club, and the Aston Villa product's strong leadership skills will help to iron out the mishaps that thwarted Everton on Sunday.
