Everton fans were begging their club to sign Hakim Ziyech after his Morocco display on Wednesday, but they’d be much better served looking closer to home.

What's the word?

Everton have been one of a number of teams linked with a move for Ziyech in the past, and the Ajax midfielder is expected to move this summer.

Fans loved his World Cup showing against Portugal on Wednesday, but the Toffees should change course and move for Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Marco Silva is almost certain to add a central midfielder this summer, and Loftus-Cheek’s ability to play in multiple positions would make him the perfect signing.

The 22 year-old seems likely to leave Chelsea in search of regular playing time, and whether it be permanently or on loan he would be a brilliant fit in Silva’s midfield.

Why Loftus-Cheek?

Ziyech showed far superior end product to the young Englishman last season, but the Moroccan plays in one of the few dominant teams in a much weaker league.

Loftus-Cheek can play on either side of the midfield, more centrally or as a creative number ten, and grabbed two goals and three assists last season in a rather poor Crystal Palace side.

The 22 year-old, valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, averaged nearly a tackle and interception per game last season (both 0.9), and completed an impressive three dribbles per game along with 1.1 key passes and 1.3 shots.

The English international stands at a powerful 6 ft 3, but has extremely quick feet and a great eye for a pass.

Ziyech is no doubt the more developed player at the moment, but Loftus-Cheek is a superstar in the making, and he’s unlikely to get the playing time he needs to develop at Stamford Bridge.
