Whether it’s because we’re stuck in the past (we’re getting old, please take us back) or because the transformation has happened fairly quickly, we rarely ever think about Everton as anything other than a team of plucky underdogs who were unearthed as hidden gems and bought on the cheap. Just look at Seamus Coleman, he was bought for less than some of the vehicles sat in Finch Farm’s car park.
But that simply isn’t the case anymore. The Toffees are never far from the gossip columns nowadays, and with big money moves for big money players being linked aplenty, it seems like we might well have heard ironic cries of “where’s the Arteta money, Bill?” for the last time. A point proven by the completion of another signing this summer.
Defensive midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin is the latest man to join Marco Silva’s ranks following a move from Bundesliga club Mainz for an estimated £25million, as per BBC Sport.
In true Everton fashion, former star, and someone we consider to be the epitome of what it was the be a Toffee during their previous phase, Steven Pienaar has taken to Instagram to wish Gbamin the best of luck for the future.
It’s the little things that make a big difference for newbies when settling into a fresh environment. Props to Pienaar for still putting in the effort.
