According to Mundo Deportivo, Everton want to bring Espanyol captain David Lopez to the club in this summer’s transfer window.
Everton are yet to bring any new players to Goodison Park this summer, but the Toffees will boost their squad before the transfer window slams shut next month.
According to Mundo Deportivo, one name high on Everton’s wishlist is Espanyol skipper Lopez, who has also linked with the Merseyside club in the January transfer window.
Newcastle United are also believed to be interested in the 28-year-old, with the Magpies said to have been quoted £35m when they approached Espanyol in early 2018.
However, Everton now appear to be in the driving seat for the Spaniard, despite the fact that Real Betis and Valencia both reportedly want to keep him in La Liga.
Lopez helped Espanyol keep 15 clean sheets in Spain’s top flight last season, and it is not a surprise that a number of clubs are being credited with an interest.
Lopez is contracted to his Catalan club until the end of the 2019-2020 campaign, and he was in impressive form last season – scoring once in 43 appearances in all competitions.
There is absolutely no question that the Spaniard has talent, and he has the frame required to play at centre-back in the Premier League.
Lopez is also quick across the ground and a good reader of the game, while he has experience of playing in another league having represented Napoli between 2014 and 2016.
Everton are in desperate need of reinforcements at centre-back this summer due the struggles of the likes of Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams last season.
Lopez can also play in midfield, meanwhile, and a move for the Espanyol captain could turn out to be smart business by Everton’s new director of football Marcel Brands.
