The England international is believed to be surplus to requirements under new Sky Blues chief Manuel Pellegrini, who has significantly strengthened his squad over the summer months – with Brazilian ace Fernandinho a key purchase.
Toffees boss Robert Martinez is said to be keen to bring in midfield reinforcements before the transfer window closes, and is keen to take advantage of the 32-year-old’s situation.
City are keen to sell, but the Merseysiders are only looking at a temporary switch with a view to a full permanent move in the future.
Everton’s Marouane Fellaini’s future is also far from clear, and Martinez could use Barry as a replacement for the Belgian, who has been liked with a move to Manchester United.
The ex-Aston Villa man has been linked with a return to his former club, while Arsenal have also been mentioned as a potential destination.
Barry has made 175 appearance for City since his £12m move to the club in 2009, and was a key part of their Premier League winning side of 2011/12.
Could Gareth Barry be a success at Everton? Or are his best days behind him?
