According to AS, Everton are considering a £25m offer for unsettled Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes in this summer’s transfer window.
Gomes moved to Barcelona from Valencia in the summer of 2016, and it would be fair to say that the midfielder arrived at Camp Nou with a big reputation.
Indeed, Manchester United had previously been linked with a move for the Portuguese, and there was a lot of excitement about his move to Barcelona.
The 24-year-old has struggled to deal with the weight of expectation in Catalonia, however, and is widely expected to leave his Spanish club this summer.
West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur have previously been linked with the midfielder, but according to AS, Everton are currently weighing up a £25m offer.
According to transfermarkt.co.uk, Gomes is valued at £13.5m, but after appearing on a regular basis for Barcelona last term, the Spanish champions are bound to ask for at least double that figure in order for talks to begin.
Gomes might have had his problems at Barcelona last season, but it is certainly worth noting that the midfielder made 31 appearances in all competitions during the 2017-18 campaign.
The 29-time Portugal international has made 78 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, meanwhile, since arriving at the club.
It has not quite happened at Camp Nou, but Gomes is a wonderful footballer, and there is absolutely no question that he has the skills to thrive in the Premier League.
If new Everton boss Marco Silva puts his arm around the Portuguese and gives him confidence, then he has the potential to be a game-changer at the top level.
The Toffees are not exactly blessed with depth and quality in a central midfield area, and Gomes would be a fine summer addition, even if the Merseyside club have to pay more than their opening £25m offer.
