Many Everton fans have been reacting on Twitter after Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio said the club's reported target Matias Vecino looks likely to stay at Inter Milan.

The Merseyside outfit have been linked with a move for the Uruguay international this month, with Nicolo Schira reporting on Twitter on Friday that they were in talks over a deal to bring him to Goodison Park to work under Carlo Ancelotti.

However, according to Di Marzio both the Serie A giants and manager Antonio Conte have decided they want to keep the 28-year-old until the end of the season – if they were ever willing to let him depart during the January transfer window in the first place.

The report says they believe that he can make a contribution for a side who are second in the Italian top flight and just three points adrift of leaders Juventus.

The news may come as a blow to Ancelotti if he wanted Vecino to strengthen his central midfield options between now and May, with previous reports suggesting that the South American could have cost €20m (£16.9m).

Some Everton supporters certainly didn't seem too worried that a potential deal is now seemingly dead when replying to a Twitter post from The Toffee Blues labelling it as a blow.

That could be down to the fact that he turns 29 years of age this year and is hardly one for the long-term.

One fan pleaded with their club to wait until the summer if they still want the player to ensure they don't get ripped off by Inter this month.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players....

The use of again is probably a subtle dig at former Director of Football Steve Walsh and current one Marcel Brands, with some of the duo's signings such as Cenk Tosun, Theo Walcott and Moise Kean not exactly paying off - the former is currently on loan at Crystal Palace for example.

Two more individuals believe that while they could miss out on Vecino, that they still need another midfield player in the centre.

The injury absences of Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin has certainly brought to the fore some weaknesses in that area - shown during the 1-0 FA Cup defeat against Liverpool when Gylfi Sigurdsson and Morgan Schneiderlin flopped - and some fans clearly want someone in even if Gomes is back in first-team training.

Another supporter wasn't convinced that this was the end of the matter, suggesting a move could be rekindled on deadline day.

Who knows what can happen at this time of year?
