It took a last-gasp Lucas Digne free-kick for Everton to salvage a point against Watford at Goodison Park on Monday night.

In a hard-fought, pulsating encounter, a draw was probably a fair result. However, the Hornets will be frustrated to have allowed victory to slip from their grasp so late on.

Marco Silva, meanwhile, will have been dismayed to see his side spurn so many opportunities to score themselves but he’ll be thankful for his left-back’s disaster-averting composure that allowed him to bury his free-kick. Had Gylfi Sigurdsson not failed to score with an earlier penalty though, the story of the game could have been very different.

On top of the missed spot-kick, Sigurdsson had a poor game generally. The 29-year-old has been in fine form so far this season - already with six goals and two assists to his name in the Premier League - but Monday night was a game to forget.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's stats vs Watford

The 64-cap Iceland international was uncharacteristically poor in possession, as he registered a woeful pass completion rating of 74%. The playmaker could only contribute one key pass too, and managed just a single successful dribble.

The penalty was not the only chance that the former Swansea man failed to take either. The No. 10 in fact had six shots against Watford - more than any other player on the pitch - but could only hit the target twice.

Silva and the Everton fan base will likely forgive Sigurdsson for this poor showing. However, if the Toffees are serious about maintaining a push for European football, then they need their big names to step up to the plate in home games against mid-table opposition.
