As Gareth Southgate prepares his England squad for this summer's World Cup in Russia, it would be borderline ludicrous to suggest that Harry Winks will make the cut.

It is perhaps easy to forget that as recently as October last year, the Tottenham starlet was man of the match on debut against Lithuania.

Winks - valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt - added composure and technical ability to a midfield that had been largely flat throughout qualification and was being talked about as a real contender for the squad; potentially even as a starter.

Unfortunately for him, injuries have derailed his season yet again and Winks has found it difficult to force his way back into the fold at Spurs at such a crunch stage of the season.

Winks has lost his way slightly and one way to rectify that could be a loan move, and although allowing a player to leave the club is sometimes a sign that Mauricio Pochettino doesn't rate a player, that need not be the case for Winks.

Everton are one club who lack deep-lying creative midfielders - Gylfi Sigurdsson is their only reliable source of invention - and potentially a loan move to Goodison Park could be mutually beneficial.
