Swansea City co-owner Jason Levein has admitted that Alfie Mawson’s future is “unclear” amid interest from the Premier League, so should Everton make a move for the towering defender?

Marco Silva and Marcel Brands have got plenty of work to do this summer, as the pair need to somehow trim an oversized squad and wage bill while also improving the starting eleven.

Some of the defensive displays last season were woeful, and Silva simply must make one or two top quality additions at the back. Kieran Tierney seems to be the target to replace Leighton Baines, but could Mawson be the man to take Phil Jagielka’s spot?

Mason Holgate impressed at times last season, but the youngster isn’t ready to be the consistent first choice, and adding Mawson would also have a huge effect on Michael Keane.

Keane improved massively when Jagielka returned from injury last season, and the ex-Burnley man’s best form at Turf Moor came alongside Ben Mee, so it’s clear he feels more comfortable playing next a commanding leader.

This leadership is something Mawson possesses in abundance, and it would take some of the pressure off Keane having the towering Swans’ centre back alongside him. The giant centre back is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.

Mawson is a no nonsense defender, but also has the technical skills to help Keane build out from the back for Silva’s new look side. He averaged nearly six clearances per game last season, and it sounds like the relegated Swans are resigned to losing him.

"It’s unclear at this point," said Levien.

"There are a few different ways that could work out. Alfie is a terrific player, he had a great couple of years with us and we value his abilities.

"Certainly we understand the market and there are going to be clubs interested in Alfie Mawson.”

West Ham and Wolves are said to be interested in the 24 year-old, but the Toffees should absolutely throw their hat in the ring.
