In Focus: Everton shouldn’t give up on Keane so quickly despite consistency issues

As reported by The Mirror, Everton are ready to sell defender Michael Keane less than a year after he arrived at Goodison Park from Burnley in a big money deal.

What’s the story?

The Toffees signed Keane for a reported £30m back in July 2017, a monster deal for the club at the time, equalling their highest ever transfer fee.

However, he’s struggled to convince managers and supporters that he can perform to the levels required at the club and that appears to have opened the door for something of a shock early exit.

The Mirror report that Sam Allardyce is ready to listen to offers for the 25-year-old, even if it means taking a financial hit on the deal and selling him for significantly less than what they paid.

The paper say that former club Burnley are keeping an eye on the situation with a view to bringing him back to Turf Moor.

Giving up too soon?

When you invest such a significant sum into a player, it seems folly to immediately cut your ties with him a year down the line, especially if their arrival hasn’t been a complete disaster.

It’s true that Keane has struggled to maintain form over long periods but he has shown glimpses of quality throughout the season, most notably in a 0-0 draw with Chelsea just before Christmas.

For Burnley he was a defensive sensation, but with confidence levels low at the Toffees, he needs encouragement to find his best form again. There’s something to work with there and Everton should continue to try and help him flourish at Goodison Park.

Settling to take a reported loss on an outgoing transfer doesn’t seem like the ideal solution for anyone but Burnley.
