According to Kick Off, Everton boss Marco Silva is keen to make a move for free agent Claudio Marchisio.

What’s the story?

Marchisio was released by Juventus this week after 25 years of service to the Turin club. Having joined the Juventus youth set up in 1993, the 32-year-old must now seek pastures new in order to maintain his playing career.

The veteran midfielder’s next stop could well turn out to be the Premier League.

Everton have already spent big this summer, bringing in a number of high profile acquisitions. The likes of Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne, Andre Gomes and Brazilian duo Bernard and Richarlison have arrived to swell the ranks at Goodison Park.

In the centre of the pitch however, the Toffees remain a little light in terms of quality depth. The recruitment of Marchisio would provide an injection of elite level talent into this part of the pitch.

Room for improvement

Everton’s likely first choice central midfielders - Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes - are undeniably strong options. The youngster, Tom Davies, is also a promising rotation choice. However, many question marks remain over Morgan Schneiderlin and Muhamed Besic.

If Everton are serious about making a push for European football this season, then Silva must first increase the level of competition for places in midfield.

The arrival of Marchisio would certainly ensure that others have to raise their games if they wish to get regular minutes in the Premier League.

Equally, at 32-years-old, Marchisio himself will be keen to prove that he still has what it takes to cut it at the top level.

If Marchisio arrives fit and firing, then he would be a very smart final addition for Silva to make this summer as he could improve Everton’s midfield contingent as a whole.
