The England international was, arguably, the Toffees’ top performer last season, producing a number of excellent displays from left-back.
Former manager David Moyes is said to be keen to lure the ex-Wigan man to Old Trafford, as he searches for a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra.
However, Martinez is hopeful of keeping Baines, and suggested that the full-back could be offered a new contract at Goodison Park:
“It is very important and it’s a case of rewarding players who have been phenomenal for the football club. I think Leighton is in that category.” He told the club’s official website.
“The chairman is very keen to express that and obviously I’m desperately looking forward to meeting the players.
“For Leighton, as the top performer he has been in the last few years, it is important that we reward his work and make sure that he can look forward to kicking on to the next chapter of his career with Everton.
“That’s important for the club as a whole, not just the dressing room.”
Baines still has two years remaining on his current deal, but it has been speculated that he could be willing to move on in search of greater financial rewards and a better chance of moving ahead of Ashley Cole in the England pecking order.
Despite being a defender, Baines notched an impressive five league goals last season, and weighed in with a further five assists.
Everton fans, is keeping Leighton Baines a must?
