Martins would help Everton achieve ambitions, but transfer would be tricky to secure

Everton recently sent scouts to watch Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins ahead of a potential move for the Portuguese star, according to the Daily Star.

What’s the word?

Martins was one of a handful of Sporting Lisbon players who chose to terminate their contracts with the club at the end of last season due to a fan attack on the squad.

The 23-year-old joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, but his brief outings for the Spanish club have already attracted attention from other clubs.

The Daily Star claims that Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have sent scouts to watch Martins, who has made just two substitute appearances in La Liga.

If the young winger impresses throughout the season, it is likely that a handful of clubs will come calling next summer.

Do Everton have a chance?

One thing is for sure – Marco Silva would benefit hugely from having Martins’s pace and trickery in his team.

The Portuguese star has bags of energy and thrives in a one-on-one situation with the ball at his feet.

Everton’s aim is to break into the top six of the Premier League, and with Martins in the side, it would make that objective more achievable.

However, judging by these reports, a number of high-profile clubs are interested in the wide man.

If multiple suitors try to secure a deal next summer, it is very likely that Atletico will raise the price tag, perhaps to a figure that would be out of Everton’s reach.
