For the few weeks leading up to the hullabaloo of transfer deadline day, it seemed a mere formality that John Stones would be swapping the blue of Everton for Chelsea. Numerous bids were lodged by the Premier League champions for the player, and despite the Merseysiders rebuffing their advances, the Londoners’ defensive woes through the opening weeks of the campaign served to intensify talk of a move being ‘forced through’.
Alas, the Blues finally gave up and instead signed Nantes’ Papy Djilobodji to bolster their ranks, leaving Toffees fans thrilled. The 21-year-old England international is guaranteed to be at Goodison Park until at least January, so it seems that some fans of the North West club were indeed right when they spun The Beatles’ ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ into ‘Can’t Buy You Stones’ during their weekend trip to the capital to take on Spurs.
It may be a few days old, but hearing it again is sure to brighten up every Everton supporter’s day!
