Everton’s Yerry Mina has suffered yet another injury setback, and the Toffees should bulk up their defensive ranks with a January move for Victor Lindelof.

What's the story?

Everton fans have been patiently waiting for Mina to return to full fitness, but the colossal Colombian is not training once again after a foot injury.

According to Marco Silva (13:36), the big summer signing suffered a stamp on his foot this week, and will not even return to training until next week.

Considering Kurt Zouma is only at the club on a temporary deal and Phil Jagielka is nearing the end of his career, Silva will absolutely have to sign another central defender in the near future.

Jose Mourinho’s “third-season syndrome” looks to be well underway at Old Trafford, and the Toffees can take advantage by moving for the out-of-favour Lindelof.

Would he be a good signing?

Lindelof was absolutely sensational at Benfica, averaging over two aerial wins per game, over three clearances and nearly two interceptions - impressive statistics playing for a team that dominates most of the opponents in their league.

While his confidence has been dashed at Manchester United, his standout trait has continued to flourish, as he completed 91 per cent of his passes for the Red Devils last season, and currently boasts an 88 per cent success rate for this season.

The Sweden international is a superior ball-player to any of Everton’s current centre-backs, which makes him the perfect man to lead Silva’s defence. Silva’s high-tempo possession-based system requires technicallygifted players all over the pitch, and Lindelof’s passing ability would be a huge asset.

While he has barely had a chance to show off his defensive skills at United, he showed at the World Cup this summer that he is a quality defender as well. Sweden kept three clean sheets in five matches, and the 24-year-old’s partnership with Andreas Granqvist was a major reason why.

Lindelof is a better defender than Michael Keane and Mason Holgate, and much better on the ball than Mina and Zouma. His position on the fringes of United’s squad combined with the chaos at Old Trafford could open the door for a January move, and Everton should be at the front of the queue.
