Everton have already started revamping their ageing defence, and the Toffees can add another shrewd signing by moving for out-of-favour Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian.

What's the story?

According to reports, Manchester United are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Luke Shaw.

This comes just a few months after the Red Devils captured 19-year-old right back Diogo Dalot, and suddenly there looks to be no place for Darmian.

The Italian got plenty of playing time last season at left-back, but Shaw’s return to form could see him leave the club in the near future, as reports in Italy claim multiple clubs are interested.

The 28-year-old hasn’t fulfilled his potential in Manchester, but his versatility would make him a very tidy signing for the Toffees.

Why would he be a good signing?

Darmian is a right-back by trade, but his ability to play on either flank would make him a very useful asset to have. The Toffees signed Lucas Digne to replace Leighton Baines, and it might not be too long before they have to do the same on the other side with Seamus Coleman if his injury issues continue.

Coleman of course has missed most of this season with a foot problem, and Jonjoe Kenny is quite simply not good enough to be starting consistently. Darmian would provide good competition for Digne on the left, and could also take over from Coleman if the Irishman continues to struggle.

After making his Serie A debut for AC Milan aged just 17, Darmian has racked up over 150 appearances in Italy and over 50 in Manchester. He also has 36 Italy caps to his name, proving once again how trustworthy he is defensively.

The versatile Italian doesn’t have anywhere near the attacking impetus of someone like Coleman, but his experience and defensive smarts could make a huge difference at Goodison, and the emergence of Dalot and Shaw means there will soon be no place for him at Old Trafford.
