Republic of Ireland fans have ripped into Seamus Coleman after the Everton defender’s poor display and sending off for deliberate handball against Switzerland on Tuesday.
Although the subsequent spot-kick was saved by keeper Darren Randolph, the Irish fans are not letting Coleman off the hook after a quite blatant attempt at blocking the ball. His marching orders against the Swiss on Tuesday means the right-back will miss the key fixture against Denmark in Ireland’s final Euro 2020 qualifier next month.
It also means that the 31-year-old has picked up two red cards in the past two weeks for club and country after he was shown a second yellow for a bad challenge on Erik Pieters against Burnley.

Understandably so, the Irish fans are fuming at Coleman for his dismissal. Not just does it mean he misses the next game, but it also casts a doubt over the country’s automatic place at the Euro 2020 next summer. Mick McCarthy’s men are top of top Group D but have played a game more than Denmark and Switzerland, yet sit on the same points as the Danish and just one ahead of the Swiss.
Matt Doherty could slot straight in, but as Coleman is the captain, his presence on the pitch will surely be missed.
Here’s what fans have had to say after his dismissal…
Could it be a positive that Coleman is suspended for Denmark? Captaincy is the only reason he’s in the team at the moment. Not at his best. Big chance for Doherty #ROI

Im actually glad Coleman was sent off and will miss the next game
Hes been very poor and Doherty will be a better option #SUIIRL— Jorgon (@Br3Morgan) October 15, 2019
Seamus Coleman out against Denmark isn’t a bad thing after his recent performances. Hope Doherty makes his point against the Danes. #COYBIG

Coleman had the worst game I can remember him having for Ireland, McLean needs to be dropped he’s a huge liability and offers very little if anything at all. His time at international level is over for me. Micks done great so far so let’s get behind them for Denmark. #COYBIG

Comfortably the poorest I’ve seen Seamus Coleman in an Irish shirt. Wasteful is being kind. ?#COYBIG

Seamus Coleman starting to become a liability these days. Poor in possession and limited end product going forward, and questionable positioning. McClean also back to his ways of wasting possession. GAH #COYBIG

Coleman absolutely shocking tonight. He must give Doherty a go. #COYBIG

Disastrous game by Coleman when we needed him most, so disappointing, Doherty has to start at right full from now on. #COYBIG

Seamus Coleman should be finished in an Ireland shirt. A complete disgrace. #COYBIG https://t.co/VjiWqtC4my

Glenn Whelan was the best player on the park in a white shirt.
Far too many passengers like Hendrick and Collins.
Seamus Coleman was pathetic all game.#COYBIG #SUIIRL
