The Sun recently reported that Everton are plotting a summer swoop for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

A new agreement between the 31-cap England international and the Red Devils does not appear close, which suggests that Smalling will be available as a free agent in the next summer transfer window.

Whilst plenty of top-flight clubs will be interested in securing the 28-year-old’s services, Everton would be wise to resist making a move to sign the defender.

In spite of all his elite level experience, which includes winning the Premier League title twice, the 6ft 4in Smalling is not the most reliable or trustworthy of centre-backs. The fact he has no place in the current England set-up, despite being in his prime years, is testament to this.

Smalling may be a decent player for the Toffees, but sights should be set higher than that at Goodison Park. If Marco Silva is serious about making the Merseyside club genuine challengers to the ‘big six’, he must focus on acquiring players who are of an improving standard. The Man United man, for his part, has peaked.

Plenty of Everton fans agree that the club should hold no interest in the United man, with 70% of those who took part in our poll voting against bringing Smalling to Goodison Park. See the full results below.
