Exactly half of the Everton fans that voted in our recent poll felt that the club let Wayne Rooney leave for the MLS too soon and that he should have seen out the final year of his contract with the Toffees.

Rooney has been on fire for DC United and since he joined at the end of June and the club have gone from bottom of their table all the way up to the play-off positions, with the Manchester United legend netting nine goals and providing six assists.

The now 32-year-old began his career at Goodison Park, making his first-team debut at the age of just 16, before moving to Manchester United during the summer transfer window of 2004.

He then went on to score 253 goals in 559 appearances for the Red Devils, before heading back to Everton on a free-transfer in 2017, signing a two-year contract with his boyhood club.

This summer though he made the move to America despite the year he had left on his contract, and 50 per cent of Everton fans that answered our poll thought this was too soon.
