Bild reported last week that Southampton had turned down the chance to sign Schalke contract rebel Max Meyer for €10m (£8.8m) during the January transfer window, and he will now be available on a free this summer when his contract expires with Everton perhaps one of the clubs that should be keeping a close eye on developments.
The 22-year-old, who has largely been playing as a central or defensive midfielder this season but has played a more attacking role in the past, has refused to extend his deal with the Bundesliga outfit, which has caused friction between him, the club and his manager.
The Germany international is currently suspended by Schalke after claiming that he was being bullied by the club, with his last appearance for them coming on April 7.
Despite his issues, Meyer has shown the quality that he has with 22 goals and 24 assists in 192 games for the German side, while he has one goal in four caps for his country.
Everton could be in for another busy summer transfer window following a disappointing campaign, and they could be looking for a Wayne Rooney replacement if the 31-year-old leaves for the MLS.
We asked Toffees fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would back a move for Meyer on a free transfer this summer, and a whopping 84% said they would.
Adding the versatile midfielder, who clearly has plenty of potential, to their squad this summer would have to be seen as something of a coup for the Merseyside outfit.
