Shaqiri move opens the door for Everton to sign Pjaca

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Marko Pjaca, but the Reds’ move for Xherdan Shaqiri could open the door for Everton to swoop in and solve their winger issues by signing Pjaca.

What’s the story?

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via TalkSPORT), Juventus have told Liverpool they can sign Pjaca this summer for £22m.

The Croatian winger has struggled to break into the side in Turin, and was shipped off on loan to Schalke half way through last season.

The Reds are of course on the hunt for a new winger to provide depth for their electric front three, but their attention seems to have turned to Shaqiri, with BBC reporting they are in talks to sign the Stoke star.

Jürgen Klopp wants a player who is happy to rotate in off the bench, which is why Everton could win the race for Pjaca by offering him consistent first team football, which is essentially the main reason for leaving Juventus.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for Wilfried Zaha, but the Crystal Palace winger would cost a ridiculous amount, and if Pjaca is really available for £22m it should be a no brainer for Marco Silva and Marcel Brands.

A mini Ronaldo?

It seems like every player that breaks through nowadays is either “the next Ronaldo” or “the next Messi”, but the 23 year-old Pjaca really was compared to Ronaldo when he broke out in Croatia.

The comparison came more from his physical traits than his technical ability, as the young star broke out at Euro 2016 with a tremendous mixture of pace, skill and power. Like Ronaldo, he is much taller and stronger than most speedy wingers standing at 6 ft 1.

A much more apt comparison though is Ivan Perisic, who has been an absolute beast for both Croatia and Inter Milan in the last few years. Like Perisic, Pjaca loves to isolate defenders one-on-one, and has the ability to cut onto either foot, which makes him almost impossible to stop.

Pjaca earned his big move to Juventus after averaging a goal every three league games for Dinamo Zagreb, but his end product has suffered at he has struggled for game time in Turin.

He did score twice during his loan spell with Schalke, suggesting he just needs a bit of consistent playing time and rhythm to find his goalscoring touch.

All in all, if Silva is searching for a new left winger to replace the disappointing Yannick Bolasie, he could do a lot worse than Pjaca for just £22m. The young Croatian is strong, quick, two-footed, and would love isolating defenders before whipping crosses in towards Cenk Tosun.
