Everton are reportedly eyeing a double swoop to sign both Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne, and Digne may just be the perfect fit at left back for the Toffees.

What's the story?

According to the Telegraph, Everton want to double up on their Barcelona raid this summer, swooping for Digne as well as Mina.

Mina has been heavily linked with the Toffees since his Colombia side were dumped out of the World Cup, and it seems Marco Silva and Marcel Brands could kill two birds with one stone by doing a double deal.

The report says Digne has aksed to leave this summer after failing to dislodge Jordi Alba from the first team, and the Catalan giants are willing to grant his wish, but only for at least £10m.

The Times writer Paul Joyce has also backed up the claims, tweeting on Thursday night that Everton are targeting the pair.

Silva and Brands are desperate to inject some new life into their defence, and swooping for the Barcelona pair would certainly do that. Celtic’s Kieran Tierney has been linked with a move, but Digne could actually be a better fit.

The French international will bring the best of both worlds, possessing the youthful exuberance that Tierney would bring, but with a little more guile and experience at the top level.

How good is he?

It shouldn’t be a mark against Digne that he has failed to make an impact in Catalonia, as the 24 year-old was tasked with competing against the timeless Alba for that left back spot.

The very fact that Barcelona saw him as a viable replacement for Alba tells you exactly what kind of player he is though, as the Spanish champions absolutely love getting their full backs way down the pitch. Digne is the perfect man to replace Baines in this respect, as he loves bombing down that flank.

Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the young left back already has 21 France caps, and was on the standby list for the World Cup. He grabbed two La Liga assists despite starting just eight league games last season, while boasting two tackles and one interception per game with an impressive 88 per cent pass success rate.

Digne is quick, direct, intelligent, excellent with the ball at his feet, and surprisingly good in the air for a full back. His final ball could use a little work, but he’s been learning from the best in Alba, and would bring a wonderful combination of guile, speed and title winning experience to Goodison.

While Tierney probably has the higher ceiling, Digne would be a solid, risk-free signing, and for around half of the price of the Scottish youngster he would be something of a bargain given the experience he has.
