Lucas Digne has been impressive for Everton this season, but head coach Marco Silva should consider a change of position for the Frenchman.
Digne is, without question, Everton’s first-choice left-back ahead of Leighton Baines, but a position further forward would help change the team’s fortunes.
In 24 Premier League appearances this season, Digne has contributed three goals and three assists.
When considering that Everton paid just £18m to sign Digne from Barcelona last summer, there is no question that he has been a success thus far.
Going forward, Digne is excellent. Indeed, his use of the ball and ability to pick out teammates from wide areas has been a key feature of Everton’s work this season.
It would also be fair to say that the Frenchman is not the most solid of defenders, however, which cost him the chance to edge out Jordi Alba at Barcelona.
Everton have conceded 39 Premier League goals this season, while they have lost four of their last five games in the top flight, which is simply not good enough.
Something has to change for the Toffees and Silva should certainly be considering a new role further up the field for the talented Digne.
At left-back, Digne does not provide enough cover to his central defenders. He is quick and does read the game well, but is often the target for deep crosses due to his height.
Selecting the Frenchman in a midfield position would give him the licence to break forward without having to worry too much about what is happening behind him.
Digne certainly has the energy and willingness to cover ground down the left and it would also make Everton more solid in a defensive area.
Next up for the Toffees is a trip to Cardiff City on February 26, before opening March with the small matter of a home game against Liverpool.
Cardiff and Liverpool will both be looking to take advantage of Everton’s defensive issues.
Silva now has a window to work on something different due to the break in fixtures and he should certainly consider a change of position for one of his most talented players.
