Everton scraped through to the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday despite some shambolic defending, and the Toffees simply must sign a leader to marshal their back four.

On the Chalkboard

Marco Silva’s Everton got back to winning ways on Saturday against League Two Lincoln City, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Toffees.

Silva’s side looked to be making short work of Danny Cowley’s Imps when Ademola Lookman and Bernard scored to make it 2-0 after just 14 minutes, but the visitors made life tough at Goodison.

Michael Botswick grabbed a lifeline for Lincoln, and if truth be told it looked like they were going to score every time the ball went into Everton’s box.

Zouma and Mina are both young and promising, but they are lacking direction and leadership – could Gary Cahill be the man to turn this around?

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he's still got it! Check out the video below...

The perfect signing?

Cahill is expected to leave Chelsea in search of more regular playing time, and the 33 year-old did not even feature in their FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

The veteran defender has played just 21 minutes in the Premier League this season, and a move to Goodison could be a win-win for all parties.

The Toffees would get an experienced leader, with 61 England caps and countless major trophies to his name, and he may be the calming influence that Mina and Zouma need to develop into top defenders.

With just six months left on his contract, the 6 ft 4 in Chelsea outcast will be an absolute bargain if he turns out to be the missing ingredient in Silva’s lacklustre defence.
