For Everton, the summer transfer window has been dominated by speculation surrounding the potential loss of two of their star players rather than the analysis of their new acquisitions.
It was also been a summer of managerial change at Everton. David Moyes has trotted off to pastures new at Manchester United and his replacement Roberto Martinez from Wigan adds a bit of Spanish flair to the Toffees make up. So far he has looked extensively to his previous club Wigan for reinforcements. Goalkeeper Joel, defender (and previous Wigan captain) Antolin Alcaraz and striker Arouna Kone have all joined from Everton’s fellow Lancashire club.
Martinez has also done business with the Spanish market bringing in impressive Barcelona youngster Gerard Deulofeu in for a season on loan. Questions remain over how quickly Martinez will be able to instil the passing style reminiscent of his Wigan side into players used to playing it relatively safe under David Moyes. Taking this on board, it is easy to see why Martinez has bought generally what he knows to add to the coffers at Everton thus far.
Yet with speculation bound to be rife up until the very last hours of the transfer window over the future of Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, here are five potential deadline day signings for Martinez to pour scorn over.
