Everton look set to end what has been a generally disappointing Premier League campaign in eighth position, and owner Farhad Moshiri will want to see a big improvement next term.

The Toffees invested heavily in their squad last summer and during the January transfer window as they looked to start challenging the top six clubs in the English top flight, but a miserable start to the season under Ronald Koeman was rescued by Sam Allardyce, who led the team away from the relegation trouble they found themselves in.

One of their biggest issues during the campaign has been their leaky defence – the 55 goals they have conceded in 37 games to date is 18 more than seventh-place Burnley – with the likes of Ashley Williams, Cuco Martina, Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane simply not being good enough at times.

It is something that the Merseyside outfit need to put right this summer if they are to ultimately achieve their ambitions, and they will want a back four that is capable of making a huge impact for them in terms of keeping clean sheets, as well as providing an attacking threat from full-back.

That backlibe will need to include new signings with the likes of Leighton Baines, Jagielka and Williams approaching the twilight years of their careers.

Here is a new-look and refreshed Everton defence that can dominate in the 2018/19 campaign…

While two – and potentially three – spots could be up for grabs in the Everton back four ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, right-back is likely to be the exception given the Toffees already have Coleman there.

The Republic of Ireland returned from a double leg break earlier this year and has effortlessly slipped back in and has been showing the form he did prior to his huge injury setback.

The partnership he is forming with Theo Walcott on the right is already promising, and the duo should have a chance to get even more of a telepathic understanding next term.

Whoever is Everton manager next season will have a big decision to make on Keane, who cost the Merseyside outfit an initial £25m fee last summer.

The England international struggled at first but has certainly improved as the campaign has gone on, and his ability in the air and his defensive qualities in general mean he has largely been a mainstay in the XI.

While some Toffees fans may not agree, the 25-year-old deserves the benefit of the doubt next season following what has been a tough campaign for him and many of his teammates, and he may even improve if he has the right partner alongside him – rather than Ashley Williams or Phil Jagielka.

The first of Everton's additions to their backline this summer to ensure they dominate next season should be Chelsea's Kurt Zouma, who looks unlikely to be a first-team regular for the Blues next term.

The France international had established himself as a regular in the west London outfit's XI prior to a serious injury in 2016, and you don't do that unless you have something about you.

The 23-year-old may have just been part of a Stoke side that has suffered relegation from the Premier League, but his strength and ability in the air could mean that he is the perfect partner for Keane.

While Leighton Baines has been a brilliant servant for Everton, the Merseyside outfit need to start looking to the future with the left-back due to turn 34 years of age later this year – 68% of their fans that voted on our poll want him replaced this summer.

They certainly need a full-back who is equally as good defensively as he is at getting up and down the pitch to help his team from an attacking point of view, and Espanyol man Martin could the answer to their problem.

The 21-year-old looks set to leave the La Liga outfit this summer and may be available for just £13.1m, and he could easily go on to be the Toffees' main player in that position for a number of seasons.
