Everton could be set for another relatively busy summer in the transfer market following a disappointing Premier League campaign in which they look set to finish in eighth position.

The Toffees looked to be well set to challenge the top six clubs in the top flight following an impressive summer of spending, but the likes of Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez have struggled as the Merseyside outfit will end the season behind Burnley in the table.

Whether manager Sam Allardyce remains in charge or not, owner Farhad Moshiri will be keen for the club to get their business correct – including getting some better value for money on their new additions – over the course of the next couple of months, and the fact that the World Cup starts in just over a month and the transfer window closes on August 9, means they will be under pressure to get deals done early.

The window officially opens on May 17, and the Toffees should have already identified the positions that need strengthening and the players that they want to do that, given they have known that they were going to be playing Premier League football next term for quite some time.

Here are three players we think Everton will sign before July 1…

One of Everton's priorities this summer has to be to bring in at least one centre-back, with Ashley Williams out of favour, Phil Jagielka getting past the stage where he is a regular starter and the future of Ramiro Funes Mori unclear.

The Merseyside outfit need to find a partner for the much-improved Michael Keane next term, and West Bromwich Albion's Jonny Evans could be the man.

The Northern Ireland international is a leader – he is the skipper of the Baggies – while he is hugely experienced in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

The fact that he is reportedly available for just £3m because of a relegation clause in his contract could mean that the top six clubs take a look at the 30-year-old, but the player will know that his best chance of playing regularly would be at Goodison Park.

Another position the Toffees need strengthening in is at left-back, with Cuco Martina filling in there for much of the campaign when Leighton Baines was missing through injury.

Baines will turn 34 years of age later this year and while he has been a great servant for the Merseyside outfit, they need to start looking to the future and finding his long-term successor in that position.

Espanyol left-back Aaron Martin could be the answer, with the 21-year-old looking set to leave the La Liga outfit this summer if a suitable offer arrives for his services – the Spanish club reportedly want €15m (£13.1m).

The Catalonia international's strengths are his crossing and his dribbling, as per WhoScored.com, while he is also sound defensively – meaning he should be a good Premier League fit.

The Switzerland international was part of the Stoke City side whose relegation to the Championship was confirmed last weekend, and Swiss media outlet Blick says that he could be available for just €14.5m (£12.6m) this summer.

Given he has scored a hat-trick at a World Cup, played for both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan and scored eight goals and provided a further six assists in 35 Premier League appearances for the Potters this season, it is clear to see the ability that he has.

The 26-year-old would certainly be an exciting addition to an Everton frontline that has struggled to find that piece of magic in the final third at times this term – both Nikola Vlasic and Yannick Bolasie were slated by fans on Twitter last weekend – and he could prove to be something of a bargain buy.
