Everton could stand to lose out on £20m after Cenk Tosun sustained an injury while on loan at Crystal Palace, Patrick Boyland has claimed on The Athletic’s Gwlad Tidings podcast (March 6th, 5:00)

What’s he said?

Tosun is set to undergo surgery after suffering a cruciate ligament injury during training on Monday.

Palace have an option to buy Tosun, Boyland has said, that would have cost the Eagles £20m but he is now set to return to the Toffees to undergo rehabilitation.

He had scored one goal for the Eagles following his January move.

And Boyland believes that it will be a bitter blow to Everton's summer transfer plans.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

He said: “There was also the option at the end of the deal for a purchase of around £20m.

“But there is now the chance that Everton, because of the extended absence, will pick up his wages and they won't get the hefty transfer fee at the end of the period because Tosun won't have the chance to prove himself. This is a blow.”

He added: "This is potentially even more significant because it could end up costing Everton over £20m in transfer fees, for a player that's not actually part of (Carlo) Ancelotti's plans."

Rotten luck

This isn’t anybody’s fault, it’s just plain bad luck.

Tosun had appeared to find a way out of Everton after making just five appearances for the club this season, scoring once.

Palace rolled the dice on taking him in and he netted in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City but now it appears that his future is up in the air.

Ancelotti is unlikely to be thrilled by the news but there really isn’t anything he can do about it.

He just has to hope that he returns to fitness within the transfer window, allowing for a sale to take place.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti can finally unleash one man!
