Everton could buff up their defensive ranks with a move for Thomas Vermaelen this summer according to Sport Witness.
Wednesday’s edition of Sport claims Barcelona are looking to extend Vermaelen’s contract but that there is interest from a Premier League club.
Because of the previous links between Everton and Vermaelen, Sport Witness believes that Premier League club is the Toffees.
Vermaelen’s Arsenal career was ruined by injuries, but the Belgian defender has found his form again under Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde, and the Catalan giants want to extend his contract to 2020.
Vermaelen’s contract currently runs out in the summer of 2019, so if Everton are indeed the interested party they could get a deal done on the cheap this summer, but they face a battle as Barcelona look to renew his contract.
Everton fans may be concerned by the 32 year-old’s injury hit past, but he has brushed those concerns aside this season. The fact that Barcelona want to extend his contract says a lot.
Despite starting the season as fourth choice behind Javier Mascherano, Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique, Vermaelen has played 14 times, cementing himself as third choice behind Pique and Umtiti.
The Belgian centre-back has revived his career in Spain, and despite his age could be a great bargain signing for Everton. His experience and Premier League know-how would be a big help to the likes of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate, and the signing could make perfect sense alongside the rumoured interest in Croatian starlet Luka Bogdan.
Vermaelen, valued at £4.5million on Transfermarkt, will not be the glamorous signing Everton fans might be hoping for, but if they can agree a deal before Barcelona renew his contract he could be a bargain, even if he only plays for a couple of seasons.
