Everton are reportedly in the market for some free signings, and they can make the rest of the league sit up and take notice by convincing Yaya Toure to return to the Premier League.

What's the story?

According to Teamtalk, Everton and Wolves have both “shown interest” in Miguel Veloso, who is a free agent after opting not to renew his contract with Serie A side Genoa.

The report says Silva is keen to add to his squad still, with lots of highly-rated free agents still looking for clubs.

If Silva and Marcel Brands are indeed seeking some free midfield reinforcements though, they should really be looking at Manchester City legend Toure.

The colossal midfielder would of course have to accept lower wages than what he was on in Manchester, but the desire to continue competing in the best league in the world could certainly tip the scales in the Toffees’ favour.

Is he still good enough?

Veloso would be a good signing for Everton. The Portuguese international is smart, experienced and versatile. However, a signing like Toure would bring so much more than that, and it would be a huge statement of intent to capture a player who was once the most dominant force in the league.

Of course, the 35 year-old is nowhere close to the form of that remarkable 2013-14 title win, when he grabbed 20 goals and nine assists and led Manchester City past Liverpool, but he still has something to offer.

Brands and Silva have worked hard to add industrious young talents like Richarlison and Lucas Digne, but an experienced match-winner like Toure would be one hell of a weapon to have in case of emergencies.

The 6 ft 2 in beast could adopt a slightly different role to the one he performed in his younger days, using his fantastic game-reading ability and passing to sit deep and dictate play, providing immediate competition for the new and improved Morgan Schneiderlin.

The 35 year-old also has the ability to win a match out of nowhere with a free kick or long-range strike, something that is always useful in a squad that is not exactly overflowing with match winners.
