Young Everton midfielder ready to step up

Ross Barkley, Everton midfielder

Everton manager David Moyes has hinted that Ross Barkley is ready to feature in the Premier League after a successful loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

Barkley proved a huge success in his two months at Hillsborough where he scored four goals in 13 outings resulting in praise from Owls’ boss Dave Jones and the recognition of his own boss back on Merseyside.

The 18-year-old has only played 18 minutes of first team football since his debut 12 months ago but is yet to make a real impact with his club, but his time out on loan this season has reignited the interest that surrounds the youngster.

With Phil Neville and Darron Gibson both struggling for fitness, Barkley will have a fantastic chance to impress as Everton are currently short of central midfielders.

“We were happy for Ross to go out there [to Sheffield Wednesday] and play the games on loan,” said the Toffees manager.

“I think it’s been good for him. He’s been playing in big games. We’ve had him watched in all the games, and I’ve watched him personally play in two games live against Leeds United and Blackburn.

“For the first three or four games it took him a little bit of time to settle, but he has then made a bigger impression.

“Ross has done great. He is a young boy, 18, and those games in the Championship will bode well for us and for him.”

Moyes is confident that Barkley would have benefited from his first team experience and hopes that it can kick start his top-flight career in the same way that Leon Osman’s when the recently capped England player returned from a spell at Derby County in 2004.
