Everton’s season has been a mixed bag thus far. The Toffees started the campaign well and played themselves into (very) early title contender talk, but a run of four winless games (Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Burnley) somewhat deflated the Merseyside club who, to their credit, bounced back well on the weekend against West Ham – who themselves had been in good form.
Although Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, who scored the goals at Goodison Park, won the bulk of the praise, Idrissa Gueye was once again at his best in the middle of the pitch. The Senegalese enforcer fought fires all afternoon and his contribution in the third of the pitch the likes of Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini flourish must not go without recognition.
As the numbers show, he was truly excellent against the Hammers. Gueye won 100% of his aerial duels, made 86% of his passes stick and weighed in with five interceptions and two tackles.
Signing of the season? It’s early days but he looks better value than Paul Pogba!
