Another international lull has not hit us but fortunately the upcoming fixtures for England could actually provide some sparks, with a World Cup qualifying clash against the old enemy Scotland on Friday before a showcase friendly against Spain.
The hostile atmosphere around the national squad is still present following Sam Allardyce’s spectacular axing just one-game into his tenure and that’s made the job of interim boss Gareth Southgate even more difficult.
All eyes were on the former Middlesbrough boss last night as he named his 23-man squad for the two upcoming games and it’s fair to say many were left frustrated with his decisions, with some questionable exclusions present.
Arguably the biggest overlooking was Charlie Austin, who is one of the Premier League’s best in front of goal this season- but Jamie Vardy, yet to score in 13 matches, keeps his spot.
8 – No English player at a PL club has scored more goals in all comps this season than Charlie Austin (8, level with T. Walcott). Champagne.

Naturally, fans felt aggrieved by the situation and took to social media to discuss what they feel was a major error from Southgate- and it’s fair to say they have a point.
Charlie Austin or Jermaine Defoe should have been called up over Vardy. He's only been called up because he won the league last season.

Jamie Vardy has gone 13 games without a goal and still gets in the England squad. Charlie Austin has 5 in 7 and misses out… ????

What more does @chazaustin10 have to do to get in the England squad? A striker that is banging in goals but doesn't get picked????

How @chazaustin10 hasn't made the England team is beyond belief. Stats don't lie, most prolific English scorer right now!

Charlie Austin not getting called up just shows exactly what is wrong with the England team.

I would love to know what @chazaustin10 has to do to get an England call up scoring goals for fun in form and still not picked confused!

Jamie Vardy without a goal in 13 games, #SaintsFC's Charlie Austin in good form
Do you think Gareth Southgate's called up the wrong man? ???? pic.twitter.com/ZaSxjJHavd
