World Cup winner Desailly reckons Rooney and his advisors were attempting a similar move to the one that earned the England forward a new contract three years ago, after he claimed he wanted to leave Old Trafford for Manchester City.
United persuaded the forward to stay with a bumper five-year-contract that made him the club’s highest earner, and Desailly reckons the 27-year-old was after a similar outcome this time.
“I wasn’t really sure he wanted to make a move to Chelsea,” he said.
“I think it is more business, than a desire to move from the club.
“Three years ago he was very clever telling the club that he wants to move to Manchester City. The club have allowed him to get the biggest salary and sign a new contract.
“This time I think they have tried again – it is business, they play the game and try to earn more.
“He doesn’t really want to move. Nobody really showed, apart from Chelsea, that they want Rooney completely, truly.”
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho failed with two attempts to lure Rooney to Stamford Bridge in the summer, and it now looks as though the England forward is set to discuss a new deal at Old Trafford in the New Year.
