According to Sky Sports, Fulham are hoping to land veteran centre-back Gary Cahill from local rivals Chelsea in the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the word?

Cahill has already made it clear that he’ll be looking to leave Stamford Bridge in the winter window unless he starts getting more game time at Stamford Bridge under Maurizio Sarri. Regular football with the Blues has still not been forthcoming though, so it is likely that the 32-year-old shall soon be seeking pastures new.

The Chelsea club captain is a Premier League icon, having won the league title twice and the Champions League once. The 61-cap former England man also earned inclusion in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons.

With the defender likely to be available at a bargain price in January, newly-promoted strugglers Fulham would be wise to win the race to his signature.

Giving the guidance they desperately need

The Cottagers currently have the worst defensive record in the division. Cahill’s experience, authority and leadership certainly ought to go a long way towards providing the Fulham rearguard with the guidance that it desperately needs.

Claudio Ranieri will be aware that his squad needs some additional Premier League know-how in January, and Cahill represents the most affordable option to fill that role at Craven Cottage. Even on a short term basis - given his age - Cahill could still have a vital impact and positive influence at Fulham.

What do you think, Fulham fans, would Cahill be a wise winter addition?
