Wayne Rooney this, Wayne Rooney that. It’s impossible to escape the debate surrounding the England and Manchester United captain, who has gone from being the most promising player to hail from these shores to a waste of space throughout his career – a career that has been littered with records, trophies and success, we hasten to add!
And the latest chapter in this saga surround claims he’ll be dropped for England’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia this week. The nugget of information comes from none other than Jim White… of yellow tie fame.
It’s my understanding that Wayne Rooney won’t start in Slovenia – Cahill or Henderson will captain England

The Sky Sports man is by no means the bile sprinkler many make him out to be and there may well be some truth in this, with Rooney having played like a drain on Saturday in the 2-0 win over Malta.
Naturally, such a revelation has generated much debate, and here are some of the best reactions on Twitter…
@JimWhite give Southgate the job immediately

@jimwhite Good. Rooney shouldn’t be in the squad.

@JimWhite Shouldn’t even be in the squad, been poor for a couple of seasons now.

@JimWhite ‘About time England dropped Rooney’. Does any remember the game against Slovakia in the Euros. Rooney rested? A dull 0 -0.

It’s not just Rooney’s looming removal from the starting XI that’s caused a stir, with Jordan Henderson being an option to take the armband having generated some less than positive chatter…
@JimWhite Henderson being captain will give hope to every pub league player in England

@JimWhite If Henderson gets the England captaincy this country has stooped even lower than we thought. Average at best
