Boss Paul Hart accepted that his Portsmouth side had been far from their best in a disappointing goalless draw with Hull City at the KC Stadium.
Pompey missed a couple of chances to take all three points back to the south coast, with Aruna Dindane unable to capitalise on a couple of openings.
Hart told Sky Sports:"I think we haven't played as well as we can do, it's probably the worst we've played in a month, but we still created chances and we need to stick one in.
"But when you consider – I don't really talk about luck, I think you generate your own fortune – but Dindane has a shot and it hits Kaboul and its on the way in, but that's what it's like at the moment.
"But there's a great spirit, they're working tremendously hard and whilst we've got that we think we've got a chance.
"They're pretty strong mentally and we're an attacking side which is unusual being faced with the challenge of getting off the bottom – we're still attacking, we're still trying to score goals.
"Our defenders were magnificent, our goalie's not had a shot to save – he's made two great punches. We looked secure, so it's just a goal we need."
