Not long ago, Chelsea and Liverpool stood either side of one of the most heated rivalries in English football. Lacking historic and geographical connection, their rivalry was spawned from rather simply, a genuine dislike of each other.
It was immortalised in a famous 1-0 at Anfield, in which Luis Garcia’s notorious ghost goal saw Liverpool progress to the final of the Champions League at Chelsea’s expense – where they, even more famously, staged an incredible three-goal comeback against AC Milan.
There’s still a bit of edge between both clubs; Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Anfield in 2014 representing one of the more significant recent instalments as Jose Mourinho parked the bus to all but end the Reds’ title hopes that season.
