Manuel Pellegrini’s offensive philosophy has produced mixed consequences so far for West Ham. While Hammers supporters have largely been impressed with the quality of performance, the east Londoners are yet to pick up a point in the Premier League after three straight defeats.
Much of that has come down to West Ham’s efforts off the ball, rather than the ability they’ve shown in possession, and no player symbolises that better than Arthur Masuaku. Nobody can doubt the Frenchman is a real asset for the Irons going forward, but he’s not a natural defender – despite lining up at left-back.
Aaron Cresswell may not be quite as dynamic as Masuaku but he represents an acceptable compromise. While the England international can make contributions in attack when he’s allowed to whip crosses into the box, he’s a lot sturdier in defence.
So, should Pellegrini opt for the more pragmatic option this weekend in Cresswell, or stick to his philosophical guns and keep Masuaku as part of his Premier League starting XI? Let us know by voting below…
