During Mauricio Pochettino’s first two seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, the structure of his starting XI was only too easy to predict with the Argentine never veering far from his 4-2-3-1 setup.
After a year-long experimentation with 3-4-3, that became the case again during the second half of last term; from November onwards, the Spurs gaffer lined his side up with a three-man defence just once in the Premier League.
But it appears Pochettino is ready to start mixing up Tottenham’s game-plan once again. He unexpectedly brought Toby Alderweireld in from the cold against Fulham last time out, using the same 3-1-4-2 system that served England so well at the World Cup in Russia.
So with a huge Premier League clash against Manchester United on the horizon, perhaps the next question is a little obvious – should Tottenham revert back to their trusted 4-2-3-1 or continue with the system that inspired the win over Fulham?
