Ross Barkley has certainly surprised a few people by seemingly moving his way into Maurizio Sarri’s plans for the new season, having started both the Community Shield and Chelsea’s first Premier League clash against Huddersfield after being stuck on the fringes of the squad under Antonio Conte.
But the 22-cap England international’s short run in the starting XI could already be coming to an end following the late acquisition of Mateo Kovacic on loan from Real Madrid.
The Croatian is yet to feature for the Blues after reaching the World Cup final but joins from the European champions with a preceding reputation as a midfielder of impressive technical quality.
