HYS: Who should replace Matteo Guendouzi in midfield vs Liverpool?

Arsenal will face their toughest test since Manchester City on the opening day of the season when they host Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, and they will have to do it without youngster Matteo Guendouzi.

The 19-year-old was signed this summer from French second division side FC Lorient, and not even Arsenal fans would have expected him to make such an immediate impact in Unai Emery’s side.

Guendouzi has now made 12 appearances at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield in all competitions, but after his red-card in the Carabao Cup win over Blackpool on Wednesday, he will be suspended for Liverpool’s visit.

This will give Emery a selection dilemma as he looks to fill the gap alongside fellow summer-signing Lucas Torreira in central midfield.

With Mohamed Elneny sidelined through injury, Emery’s best bet would probably be to move Granit Xhaka back into midfield and if necessary, play Carl Jenkinson at left-back, as the 26-year-old Swiss international is the most defensively-minded.

Otherwise the Spaniard’s options would be Aaron Ramsey, who will leave on a free transfer next summer, as well as youngsters Emile Smith Rowe and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who have admittedly both impressed recently.

So, Arsenal fans, who would you like to see starting in place of Guendouzi on Saturday? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
