Jose Mourinho's relationship with Luke Shaw has not been straight forward since the Portuguese manager took over at Old Trafford.

The former Southampton left-back fell out of favour with Mourinho following a 3-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road last season and spent extended periods excluded from the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

However, it looks as if the rift had been patched up between the pair in January when Mourinho called Shaw one of the best left-backs in the world.

Having made that bold claim, Mourinho has largely preferred Ashley Young ahead of him since. He seems to think that the former Aston Villa man is a steadier option, despite the fact he is a converted winger.

The 31-cap England international has looked shaky in recent weeks and his contribution going forward has been nullified by the increased freedom demanded by Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba on the left hand side.

After an unimpressive display in Monday night's win over Crystal Palace, Young was replaced by Shaw and there is the chance that a change could be made for Saturday's crunch clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
