Manchester City travel to Anfield on Sunday for what is set to be the biggest clash of the Premier League season so far. Pep Guardiola’s side sit at the top of the table on goal difference, with both sides two points ahead of Chelsea and hoping to get a jump on the other in an early push for the title.

Liverpool though have now failed to win in three games after losing to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and drawing with the Blues in the league, before a late Lorenzo Insigne goal consigned them to defeat at Napoli in the Champions League.

For Jurgen Klopp, his front three has looked a shadow of what it was last season, when Liverpool beat City twice at Anfield, scoring seven goals across the two fixtures.

Sadio Mane started the season in fine form, but both he and Mohamed Salah have been disappointing in recent weeks. Klopp’s main man up front, Roberto Firmino, has also struggled slightly since his last-minute winner against Paris Saint-Germain and perhaps the German boss should reward Daniel Sturridge with a start against his old club, after he saved a point for the Reds versus Chelsea with his late stunner.

The 29-year-old is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt and now seems to be able to provide that moment of magic which became somewhat of a trademark in his earlier years at Liverpool. Clearly Firmino is a top striker but Klopp could surprise Guardiola with the inclusion of Sturridge.
