Whether its football or golf there are shots that, as soon as the ball leaves the foot or the club and soars into the back of the net or slides across the green into the hole, instantly etch their mark in the history of the game.

At the ICONS of Football 2017 Tournament former English football legends will take on former Rest of the World football stars in a battle at the Belfry from 23rd-25th June. These Icons will be trading in their footballs for a set of golf clubs, where they will see how their finishing ability and touch on the pitch will transition onto the golf course.

England’s ICONS are no strangers to sport’s biggest stage, having been the conduits to some of the most recognisable goals in world football. With players of their calibre it is difficult to narrow down just a few of their most memorable goals, but we will give it a go.

Here’s a look at some of the most memorable goals from five members of the England team...

Paul Scholes vs Aston Villa

Paul Scholes’ rocket against Aston Villa was a thing of beauty. The star midfielder scored after the ball ricocheted outside of the box and at the foot of Scholes, who volleyed the ball over the outstretched reach of the keeper, deflecting off the bottom of the crossbar. A Premier League classic.

Steven Gerrard vs West Ham

Steven Gerrard’s career is full of memorable goals but one of his finest came against West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup final.

Having already scored earlier in the final, Liverpool still found themselves down 3-2 down in the the 90th minute, but the captain came to the rescue with a screamer from more than 30 yards out. Gerrard nestled the bouncing ball in the bottom right corner and the rest is history.

Alan Shearer vs Everton

Alan Shearer is the leading goal scorer in Premier League history so there are plenty of memorable goals to choose from. One of Shearer’s best goals came against Everton. Behind in the match by a single goal, Shearer received the ball outside the box and volleyed with power past the goalkeeper.

Andrew Cole vs Liverpool

Andrew Cole scored several great goals over his career that helped establish him as one of the deadliest forwards in the Premier League era. During his stint at Blackburn, the legendary forward netted one of his most memorable. Cole controlled the ball neatly with his chest and then volleyed from about 30 yards out, over the Liverpool keeper. The English side at this year’s ICONS of Football tournament will need Cole to continue his penchant for thriving in big moments.

Robbie Fowler v SK Brann

The Toxteth Terror was one of the most gifted goal-scorers of his generation. Robbie Fowler was a goal threat anywhere on the pitch. One of his most impressive goals came in a UEFA Cup clash against Brann. Fowler received the ball from a header and then flicked it over the defender’s head, using his heel behind his back, before running onto it and smashing it past the keeper.
