Liverpool’s scoreless draw with FC Porto last night won’t be remembered as fondly as their 5-0 win in the first leg, but it was nonetheless an efficient performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side who did what they needed to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
Accordingly, glamorous individual displays were few and far between, but if one player stood out at Anfield, it was promising young defender Joe Gomez.
The England international has shared Nathaniel Clyne’s void with Trent Alexander-Arnold this season and often impressed, last night providing another key instance.
Indeed, Gomez made the most interceptions and second-most tackles of any Liverpool player and while his defensive qualities are already well-established, viewed by many as a future centre-half, the 20-year-old showed his technical strengths as well, creating one chance, successful in three dribbles and completing 91% of his passes.
Heading into a Northwest derby in which Liverpool will need to defend well at Old Trafford, that leaves Klopp with a key decision to make for Saturday’s early kickoff – especially with Alexis Sanchez expected to line up on Manchester United’s left wing.
